With the modest setup and Ed W2SI steering the 145/435 Yagis, we made 5 satellite QSOs on RS44 17:30 UTC pass. The N4BRF call was used and we made SSB QSOs with AK3Y-FM19; K4BAD EM77; K8YSE/7 DM43; XE1MYO and WA6DNR. Joe N1JIW and Steve N0ADF were also with us to witness the satellite contacts. On Saturday morning, after setup at 8:15A, we had the opportunity to brief passes of AO-91 and RS-44, but they were low passes and had minimal to no activity. By 10:30A a crowd of 20 members gathered for the 10:45A pass of AO-91, an FM repeater single-channel on 435.960 downlink. Although none of us were prepared just then to transmit to the uplink, we heard a dozen Central and South Americans exchanging call in Spanish, and another station or two in English. Shortly after we had the 10:55A pass of the RS-44 satellite, which was passing from north to south and peaking at an elevation of 75 degrees at the club location. Several members were using their iPhones using the SATSAT app and tracked the pass carefully with the 145MHz uplink Yagi and the 435MHz downlink Yagi. Once we heard the beacon, the transceiver was tuned to the up/down link frequencies and on SSB, N4BRF was able to QSO with WB2TQE in EL96, XE1L in DL80, KP3Y in FK78 , FG8OJ in FK96 and YS2CBV in EK53. Several folks hung around almost 2 hours for the next RS-44 pass and we were able to have a CW QSO with WA6ARA in DM18. The future is bright for satellite activity at the club. We pulled out the previously donated Yagis for 144 and 432, made a plan to refurbish some parts, mount them on a temporary mini-tower with a Yaesu AZ-EL rotor for our next satellite opportunity. Hopefully we can have the antennas then mounted on the satellite tower at the VHF end of the shack and get enough coax cable to make the station operational with an ICOM 820H radio, donated by WA2VNV.

Today I brought the two rigs out and on the 1:30P pass of RS44 I made a CW QSO with XE1L and an SSB QSO with a YS station in El Salvador. Both quick and easy. Used my HB beams for 144 & 432. Hopefully we’ll have easy satellite passes during WFD. 73, Rick K1DS
OP DATE 2022-12-29 CLICK FOR SAT1 QSO Used my FT100D no preamp, 8 El HB BEAM, hand tracked the 12:37p pass and copied the beacon also on 435.605 Another clip of the newest satellite beacon today at 3:10P. Chasing Doppler as the beacon center freq is 435.570 but when headed towards us, it is found about 12KHz high and you have to chase it. This is CAS5A, (the FO118) flying low at about 270 miles so 11 minutes pass. I’ll probably pick a time to bring everything to the club and set up outside and make some satellite QSOs so we can be sure everything works.
